Aspen Glen’s Story
Set in a spectacular mountain valley 32 miles from Aspen, Colorado, Aspen Glen is a 938-acre private country club community with exceptional golf and fly-fishing. During its opening year, the Nicklaus/Jack Nicklaus II Golf Course was honored as one of the Top 10 new private courses by Golf Digest Magazine. Aspen Glen stretches along the banks of the Roaring Fork River offering Gold Medal trout fishing in the shadow of 12,953 foot Mt. Sopris.
Walking across Aspen Glen in the early morning, it’s easy to let your mind wander back to the historical role this property played in the Roaring Fork Valley. Human habitation at the Aspen Glen property dates back to the Ute Indians. Richard Sopris, an early pioneer, led an expedition into the valley to explore its mineral wealth. Mount Sopris was named for him in 1889. When gold and silver were discovered in the valley in 1879, prospectors and homesteaders poured into the valley. Along with the homesteaders came workers for the new railroads and mines that produced marble and coal up the Crystal River around Redstone and Marble Colorado.
The big news of 1887 was the arrival of the Colorado-Midland Railroad, operator of the turn-around (built near the second tee.) The four brothers of the Sievers family operated a ranch they formed in 1885 on about 640 acres of what is now Aspen Glen. In 1894, the partnership dissolved, and George Sievers retained the original ranch property, which operated until it was sold to Aspen Glen in 1992. The southern portion of the Aspen Glen property, about 300 acres, was owned by the Crane and Peebles families from 1895 to 1920. It was later sold to Peter Chuc, the Seeburg family, Phillip Anschutz and finally Aspen Glen in 1992. The Aspen Glen project was a concept by John Elkins and John Brown, who bought the property in 1992. The Melrose Company purchased Aspen Glen in 1994.
Jack Nicklaus and his son, Jack Nicklaus II, designed the Aspen Glen golf course. The back nine opened in July 1997 and in September, Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II played the inaugural round consisting of all 18 holes at the Aspen Glen Club. The clubhouse was built in two phases and completed in July 2000.

All the activities you consider part of the Colorado lifestyle are available in the Roaring Fork Valley (Glenwood Springs, Carbondale, Basalt, Snowmass, Aspen). There are numerous hiking trails to explore. The Rio Grand Trail, a paved path from Glenwood Springs to Aspen, is just outside the front gate of Aspen Glen. Cycling, mountain biking, rafting and horseback riding are popular summertime activities. World-class skiing is just a short drive away with your choice of Aspen Mountain (aka Ajax), Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, Snowmass and Ski Sunlight. In addition, our neighboring resorts, Vail, Beaver Creek and Arrowhead are only an hour and 20 minutes from Aspen Glen. Aspen Glen is 45 minutes from Aspen where culture thrives; the Aspen Institute, Aspen Music Festival, Aspen Ideas Festival, Jazz Aspen Snowmass, Aspen Sante Fe Ballet, Aspen Art Museum and Wheeler Opera House.
Aspen Glen is a private, gated community where you get to know the “front gate crew.” They regularly drive around the 938 acres (500 of which are open space), welcoming residents and guests and providing a 24/7 presence. 55% of the residents live in Aspen Glen year-round.
The high desert climate, referred to as “the banana belt” by locals, offers homeowners a temperate winter and warm summer with low humidity.
Residents of Aspen Glen are allowed to wet-wade fish along the 2.5 miles of the Gold Medal Roaring Fork River that meanders through the community. Waters designated as “Gold Medal” by Colorado Parks and Wildlife are considered to provide outstanding angling opportunities for large trout. There are 9,000 miles of Colorado streams of which 322 miles are Gold Medal Fisheries; the Roaring Fork Valley is fortunate to rate 22 miles. The Fryingpan River, with access in Basalt, boasts 14 miles of world-class fishing while the Colorado River provides 40 miles of great wade fishing and scenic float fishing.

Aspen Glen is easily accessible to/from the area airports: 35 minutes from Aspen Airport (ASE); 55 minutes from Eagle Airport (EGE); 1.5 hours from Grand Junction Airport (GJT); and 3 hours from Denver International Airport (DIA).
